¿Por qué renunciaste a tu militancia
comunista?
En 1989 yo tuve el privilegio
de viajar al Centro Internacional de Física Teórica en Trieste, Italia. Allí, entre otras cosas, vi por
la televisión italiana cómo el gobierno Chino envió tanques de guerra a reprimir a los estudiantes en
la Plaza Tiananmen. Cuando regresé a Cuba comprobé que toda la prensa cubana, totalmente controlada por el gobierno,
mintió sobre lo que allí pasó:

Otro hecho que pasó
en Cuba mientras yo estuve en Italia influyó mucho en mi decisión de resignar a mi militancia comunista: el
proceso contra el general Ochoa y otros altos funcionarios de la policía política cubana. Después de
leer todo lo que el gobierno cubano publicó sobre el juicio por narcotráfico contra varios generales cubanos,
para mi quedó completamente claro que toda la cúpula gobernante cubana, incluyendo a los hermanos Castro, estaba
involucrada en el narcotráfico.
El proceso contra el general Ochoa
Yo entré al
partido comunista voluntariamente y, formalmente, se puede salir voluntariamente del partido comunista. Pero las represalias
no se hicieron esperar cuando yo informé de mi decisión al partido. Inmediatamente fui expulsado de la Universidad
de Oriente, donde impartía clases de Física y era el jefe del departamento de Física Teórica de
la Facultad de Física y Matemáticas.

Why do you resign to your communist militancy?
In 1989 I had the privilege
to travel to the International Center for Theoretical Physics at Trieste, Italy. Besides other things, I watched in the Italian
television how the China government sent war tanks against the students in the Tiananmen Square. When I returned to Cuba,
I discovered that all the Cuban media, totally controlled by the government, lied about what happened in Tiananmen:

Another success happened
in Cuba while I was in Italy, which had a strong influence in my decision to resign my communist militancy: the
process against the general Ochoa and other officials of the Cuban political police. After I read everything that the Cuban
government published about the accusation of drug-trafficking against a group of Cuban generals, for me was crystal clear
that the top members of the Cuban government, the Castro brothers included, were involved in the traffic of illicit drugs.
The process against the general Ochoa
I volunteered to enter
to the Cuban communist party and, formally, it is possible to freely leave the communist party. However, harsh consequences
immediately followed my decision to leave the party. I was expelled from the Oriente University, where I was physics professor
and chair of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Physics and Mathematics College.
